North Wales nurse rotas

Betsi Cadwaladr health board has engaged expensive consultants to come up with a brainwave to save money:  Extend nurses' shifts by an extra half hour without pay.

The proposal, currently out to consultation, would mean a nurse currently working a 12 hrs 30 minute shift (with half an hour unpaid break) expected to work the same shift but only get paid for 11 hrs 30 minutes.

Currently many nurses take their breaks on their wards or unit and are effectively on call in an emergency. This is purely down to the goodwill of hard-working staff and this vindictive approach threatens to undermine nursing morale and goodwill totally.

The changes will effectively mean full-time nurses having to work an extra shift a month to make up the unpaid hours.

Nurses should be paid more, not less. Our lives are literally in their hands! How dare these people suggest they work for free, especially when they already give so much. I’d like to see THEM working for free!

You make savings elsewhere, such as removing expensive, ineffective and unnecessary management. NHS is being run as if it were any other business. It’s purpose is not to make money but rather to save lives, this does cost unfortunately and takes place in the busy wards at the hands of these fantastic people, not by the pen pushers in their disconnected upstairs offices.

Stick THEM (politicians) on the wards for a week and see what they’d say!

Why not get the management to roll up their sleeves at the end of their day and work another hour on the wards for free? Nurses hardly get their half hour break and are expected to work another half hour unpaid, all in a 12hour shift!

What qualifies these people to make such suggestions and take such decisions? I’d like to know.

Also, what scientific indisputable evidence do they have that shows that this will lead to an improvement in care/lives saved (the NHS’ goal)?

The NHS is a wonderful system, let it breathe and live, not bleed it to death.

Its ridiculous. We work hard as it n now expect to miss that extra time with family (our own children) for free n have to struggle financially ourselves.

This starts with you
