kronospan safety

The fire at Kronospan in Chirk is the most serious in a series of recent incidents at the plant. Despite numerous fires and the concerns of local residents, Natural Resources Wales (NRW) only brought in mobile air quality monitoring equipment on January 15th.

The health and safety of local residents and workers at the plant is paramount. Providing real reassurance for the community would also be the best way to safeguard the hundreds of jobs at the plant and the impact the plant has on the local economy.

NRW is responsible for monitoring the plant and they, along with other agencies, confirmed on Wednesday that 1,000 tonnes of wood was still alight. This is causing air pollution in the surrounding areas and rightly a cause of great concern for the health of vulnerable people, including children, the elderly and people with respiratory problems.

Kronospan has committed to an inquiry into this serious incident. We need an independent inquiry with community representation so that we can move forward.

We call for an independent inquiry with community representation into recent fires at Kronospan in Chirk. We want to safeguard the community's health and safety as well as that of the workers at the plant. The best way to safeguard the plant's future is to improve the safety there.

Serious Health and Safety, environmental and other issues have followed the factory throughout it’s history, and it’s time to make a stand and put a stop to it for the sake of the whole community and particularly our children! – A community that has been blighted by noise pollution, inconvenience, wood dust and who even knows WHAT chemicals it’s been forced to breathe in over the years!

Kronospan need to answer properly for this. Their arrogance is shameful. They need to make their factory safe by taking responsibility for the future. Make Chirk safe!

Thank goodness that someone is finally listening to the residents of Chirk and surrounding areas, I suffer with C.O.P.D.breathing difficulties, last week I couldn’t really go out of the house because of the fumes from the fire, if it was wind was blowing in our direction it was absolutely horrendous,

Kronospan is THE Neighbour from Hell. The company’s real record on H&S is poor but it is its attitude towards its corporate responsibilities that are appalling. It.treats the chirk community as a nuisance it must tolerate. Throughout the year the community is subjected to toxic wood dust that coats our cars, are homes and ours and the children of Chirk’s lungs. The recent fire incident came as a result of building a huge heap of 1000s of tons of material that once wet begins to compost, generating heat and ultimately catching fire. The heap contained many items full of toxic chemicals including vast quantities of Formaldehyde. Many residents suffered and continue to suffer chest and breathing problems, throat irritation and skin rashes and sores. For this company to flaunt legislation for so long it must be using corrupt practices. It needs investigating now.
