North Wales nurse rotas

Betsi Cadwaladr health board has engaged expensive consultants to come up with a brainwave to save money:  Extend nurses' shifts by an extra half hour without pay.

The proposal, currently out to consultation, would mean a nurse currently working a 12 hrs 30 minute shift (with half an hour unpaid break) expected to work the same shift but only get paid for 11 hrs 30 minutes.

Currently many nurses take their breaks on their wards or unit and are effectively on call in an emergency. This is purely down to the goodwill of hard-working staff and this vindictive approach threatens to undermine nursing morale and goodwill totally.

The changes will effectively mean full-time nurses having to work an extra shift a month to make up the unpaid hours.

I recently had to have an emergency operation at glan clwyd hospital and the nurses were amazing. So friendly and attentive and they kept this up even though they were absolutely worked off their feet and often under staffed. To put it plainly do not punish the people who are actually doing the most work for your bad money management. Cut all these expensive waste of money consultants for a start! And carry on cutting the fat off at that level!

Never get off the shift on time and therefore the trust gets enough unpaid work from us already.

It’s wrong to add pressure to the nurses shift when they give so much more than they should already. Most of them probably work that many hours for free as it is eating on the go etc.
