Countess of Chester

We, the undersigned, call on the Countess of Chester Hospital Foundation Trust to reverse its decision to bar patients from Wales from new outpatient referrals. The unilateral ban on Welsh patients is unethical and goes against the values of the NHS. There is a financial dispute that needs to be resolved urgently between various NHS bodies and they must act immediately to end this stalemate. In the meantime we demand that patients are allowed to access services at the Countess of Chester Hospital.

Nice to see that money has become more important then patient care. People have enough to worry about when unwell without trying to get to hospital appointments.

The founding principle on the NHS website is: ‘The NHS was created out of the ideal that good healthcare should be available to all, regardless of wealth. When it was launched by the then minister of health, Aneurin Bevan, on July 5 1948, it was based on 3 core principles:

that it meet the needs of everyone

that it be free at the point of delivery

that it be based on clinical need, not ability to pay

These 3 principles have guided the development of the NHS for the past 70 years and remain at its core.’

Is this really at the core with this decision and should you be stating this when you are not following it.

I was born at the countess and have lived in East Flintshire and Cheshire all of my life. The countess is our closest hospital by 12 miles in Deeside and I believe that patients should be referred to their closest hospital regardless of borders on a map. The NHS should be a national service as in UK wide not segregated into Wales and England. I completely disagree with Welsh devolution anyway and I’m disgusted that patients are missing out on critical care because of this product of devolution. People waiting longer for treatment will always result in more patient deaths and suffering and these are people who have paid in to the system all their working lives and their forebears before them since the NHS was created. The service in Wales is not capable of servicing all of Flintshire, it was never meant to. The countess was built to serve this area and our other local hospitals closed shortly after. It’s our money that’s being spent on our behalf after all and to be denied treatment at a hospital built to service our area because people who are supposed to act in our best interests have decided not to pay our money where we need it is just disgusting.

I was born in the Countess as were both my children. I think this is ridiculous to be ruled out for where we live. Maybe some of us can’t afford Chester rates.
