Close Hafod Tip

The recent fire at the Hafod landfill site between Johnstown and Ruabon caused a large plume of dense black smoke to spread across the local area. People were urged to close their windows and stay indoors - for good reason. The burning of plastics and other waste materials can create dioxins and furans, highly toxic chemicals that can get into the food chain and accumulate in larger mammals, including humans.

The landfill site at Hafod quarry was imposed on the community more than a decade ago by councils in Merseyside, who saw this as an easy way to dispose of their rubbish. Despite being refused planning permission initially by Wrexham Council, it was granted on appeal by the then environment minister Carwyn Jones.

We need an independent inquiry to find out how the fire started and assess the dangers caused by the landfill site.

We also need councils to take responsibility for their waste and stop taking the easy option of dumping it in Wales.

We say close Hafod landfill site down and recycle or re-use your rubbish.

Please sign and share our petition.

Following the fire at Hafod landfill site, we call for the following:

- an independent inquiry to find out how the fire started and assess the dangers caused by the landfill site.

- for other councils to take responsibility for their waste and stop taking the easy option of dumping it in Wales.

- close Hafod landfill site down

This landfill is the Bain of our lives….it continually stinks, the road is always muddy and slippery when it rains. We’ve had the 50mph speed limit and ave speed cameras imposed on us on the A483…supposedly to improve air quality…I say close the landfill and that would decrease the number of HGV,S travelling to and from the land fill and improve air quality especially as the majority are from Liverpool and the Wirral.

Then to top it off we’ve now been breathing in toxic fumes for 3 days due to the fire and burning of unknown materials…..we need answers as to the makeup of the fumes and the consequence of breathing them in…..close the Landfill…

I think this site is dangerous & needs shutting down. I am fed up of the smell & the flies I end up with due to the tip.It has been bad enough being in lockdown to then not be able to go in the garden & having to keep the doors & windows shut in this hot weather due to the toxic smoke. The air pollution test done was far too late as this was not even done till late on the Thursday. I think an air pollution monitor should be in place all of the time.I bet the house prices will go down in value too due to this fire that is totally unacceptable

I grew up in Ruabon and my parents still live on Albert Grove, writhing close proximity to the landfill site. I’ve always been concerned about the health impact and air quality but this fire is surely the final nail in the coffin? Please close it! How many landfill sites with excess methane does one village deserve??

I’m originally from Johnstown, all my family still live there. The smell is disgusting whenever I visit, the residents categorically shouIdn’t have to live in those conditions.

I also drive past it on the A483 regularly and again the smell is awful. Surely there are better suited sites situated farther away from so many people.
